EVERY month Tside will bring you an exclusive interview and film with a member of University of Teesside staff to find out what they do every day.

This is a chance for you to get to know all of the ‘back stage’ staff who make the University work.

Reporter BEN GLASS and producer STEPHEN WICKETTS met up with Martin Pout, Assistant Dean (Recruitment and Widening Participation) for the School of Arts and Media.

“The most important thing I do is making sure the right person is on the right course for them.”

Martin Pout, who is in charge of marketing and admissions for the School of Arts and Media, knows what it is like for a large number of University of Teesside students.

The local lad from Hartlepool was one of the first people in his family to go to university when he went to Loughbrough University to study sports science.

And he thinks it’s very important for the University to attract as many students from backgrounds which may not have gone in to higher education in previous generations.

Martin said: “There is a lot of talented young people in the Teesvalley and we want to get students in to the University to see what it is all about and to see how they could benefit from studying in higher education”.

“Our students are our first, second and third priority at the University of Teesside. They are what matters the most and so we are constantly evaluating what we are doing to make sure the students are getting the best possible education to help them fulfil their potential.”

Martin says that one of the most important parts of his jobs is getting students in to the University to see whats on offer and show potential students the benefits of studying in higher education and the tremendous opportunities that are available at Teesside.

Day-to-day he is responsible for making sure Teesside attracts students from all over the county. And so far it seems his plans are working. Recruitment is going up each year, and next year looks likely to be the biggest cohort for the School of Arts and Media so far!

“We know that once prospective students see the campus and meet the lecturers they will want to come here, so a big part of my job is getting them in the first place,” he added.

“Our courses and facilities are second to none – we know students will love them once they get here.

“I am immensely proud of my colleagues within the School of Arts and Media and how hard everyone works to ensure students receive the best possible educational experience. We were delighted to see this being recognised on a national scale with both the Media and Design sections being ranked top in the country for student satisfaction from the recent National Student Survey.”

“All we want to do is ensure that you get the highest possible education so that when you leave the university you make the most of that education and you can use that to get the best job possible.”
