Students graduating at Teesside University

For the first time ever Teesside University have chosen to hold their yearly graduation ceremonies over a period of  five days.

An estimated 9,000 family and friends will watch their loved ones pick up their degrees in twelve ceremonies.

Students gathered in the university grounds where they had professional photographs taken before walking down Albert Road to Middlesbrough Town Hall where the ceremonies are taking place.

Dave Perry who is graduating on the second last day of the ceremonies,collecting his degree in Criminology said: “My experience at Teesside has been great. The course was taught brilliantly and extra help was always given when needed.

“The whole experience that I’ve had on campus has been unforgettable. It’s definitely a memory I’ll keep forever. I’m also considering applying for a Masters degree here at Teesside after a year out.”

Keshia Azam,21 who has studied Psychology”I’m really excited to be graduating but really nervous I might fall over or something.”

Sarah Phoenix is keeping it in the family graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Sociology on the same day that her mother Sue will receive her Masters degree in Creative writing.

Sarah said: “We’re really excited to be getting our degrees on the same day; it’s purely a coincidence that it’s happening.”

Many achievement awards are also handed out to students who have excelled during their time at Teesside including the new ‘Victoria Lawrence’ award which has been created after she passed away last December.

Victoria’s Mum Lynne Lawrence said:  “Today was lovely and sad at the same time Alison who received the award was a lovely person and so proud to be the first to receive the award.”

Professor Graham Henderson, Teesside University’s Vice-Chancellor, said: ‘Our annual graduations are always a special occasion, not only to recognise our students’ achievements but also to highlight the crucial support of their families, friends and loved ones. For this year’s 12 ceremonies to be taking place just a month after we were declared University of the Year makes them doubly special.’

The university has also begun to become a You Tube hit after creating their ‘Now thats what I call Graduation video which to date has over 10,000 hits on the site.

Teesside’s Vice-Chancellor urged the graduates and their guests to be positive about their bright futures despite the current recession:

‘If you haven’t been fortunate enough to find the job of your dreams yet, don’t despair, these are unusual times and things will get better. It’s people like you that are going to be pivotal to getting our economy started again and ensuring we’ve a great future to look forward to. Many congratulations to you all and good luck for the future.’

The graduation ceremonies ended with five honorary degrees being handed out to distinguished individuals. This included Duncan Bannatyne OBE who recieved a Doctorate of Buisness Administration. These degrees will be awarded to these individuals by the University’s Chancellor, Lord Sawyer of Darlington.
