In the Driver’s Seat – MSM?!

Back in the days when I was learning to drive one of the first things I remember being taught was MSM (mirror, signal, manoeuvre.) It was constantly hammered into my brain- if I was to change lane, pull out , turn a corner, almost everything involved MSM.

BlindspotsAnyway the reason that I am bringing this up, is because it appears that drivers have forgotten to actually check anything before they change lanes!

Over the last 4 days I have almost been hit by 5 people changing lanes and not noticing I was in it!  It is like somebody has a death wish on me!

At first it was big huge lorries and vans.  In fact 3 of the incidents have involved them.  You would think they would take extra care to make sure no body was in the lane considering the size of the vehicle!? But unfortunately for the lorries I’ve encountered this week that hasn’t been the case.

So this is now another reason why I hate driving near lorries! It is creating a phobia, I’m extra extra cautious when I drive beside one now.

Until today I thought that lorries were my only problem however on my drive home from Uni, down the A66 some stupid woman decided to move into my lane without checking if I was there!

I had to beep at her! and I hardly ever beep! I think it is because I don’t like confrontation, and beeping at someone means they will know that I’m ranting about them!

What makes this whole matter worse is the fact that she was driving a brand new Ford Fiesta Titanium ( my dream car that I get jealous seeing anyone else driving!)  She doesn’t deserve to ‘drive’ that car! Its stupid drivers like her that give women drivers a bad name!

The scariest incident of this week however happened when I was driving back from Redcar after picking up my friend.  The A66 was again the setting for the possible disaster.  I was driving behind a van when its break lights suddenly came on! (Some idiot had pulled in front of it, with the van going 50mph and them going about 10 this caused a problem.) The van suddenly broke and because of the size of it, it was hard for me to see what was going on in front.

I slammed my breaks down so hard but it didn’t seem to work, Bertie was still moving.  In the few seconds of panic, worry, and desperation I resigned to the fact that I was going to hit the back of the van and that Bertie would be ruined.  My friend in the passenger seat, who doesn’t like being in cars at the best of times, was sat in the full on brace position!

Miraculously I never hit the van! I must have been millimetres away from it!  Bertie can continue driving me around.

So, from a week of scares, rage and shock all that I am asking is for drivers to remember those 3 letters they were taught right back when they learnt to drive..

Please check your mirrors and blind spot before changing lanes….

Thank you .
