Marlon King a Premier League footballer, who played for Middlesbrough F.C.  earlier this year, has been jailed for 18 months.At the end of October Marlon King was jailed for attacking a young girl in a nightclub. King, 29, who is six-foot tall, punched a 20-year-old student so hard in the face that he broke her nose.

King was on a six month loan to ‘the Boro’ in January this year. He already had a dozen convictions against him for various offences, yet Middlesbrough still took him on, knowing of his criminal past.

Footballers are supposed to be role models, people who we look up to, especially children. Many kids fantasize about growing up and becoming a footballer, they want to be just like their role models, just like people such as Marlon King.

It’s a disgrace that King was ever even allowed to continue playing football, after he attacked an opponent during an amateur match back in 1997, breaking the mans eye and cheek socket. I’m disgusted to say he was ever even a part of my home team Middlesbrough F.C.

At what point did footballers start making their own rules? If this was any other normal, working persons job, they wouldn’t get continuous second chances. King is a criminal, that has a hatred towards women, and has broken the law time and time again and is still allowed to play football. So what, he can play good football, but there are plenty of other people who can play just aswell, who could have stepped in his shoes any day.

King has attacked women on more than one occasion. In 2003 he was convicted of two common assaults after chasing two women, one of them saying he punched her, and in 2006 he was convicted of being abusive to another woman, slapping her in the face, and even spitting on her in front of the police. King who earns around £35′000 weekly, told his most recent victim before punching her, “Don’t you know who I am? I’m a millionaire. You’re not even in my league.” It seemed as though the student rattled his cage, after he groped her and she told him to back off. Not getting what he wanted the piggish footballer left her with a broken nose, a black eye, and a swollen lip.

How come King who in total has 13 convictions against him, was still allowed to play football? This man, and i use that word loosely, was already known to have convictions against him for attacking women, plus many motoring convictions including drink driving, theft convictions, and so on. He had even served time in jail for receiving stolen goods, plus his convition of wounding an oppenent footballer. Yet against his violent past, even towards other footballers, he was still signed to play for various Premier League football teams, earning more in a week than most honest, hard-working people can earn in a year.

There are many young, talented, dedicated, law-abiding, amateur footballers eager to be signed to a team such as Wigan Athletic , and most would probably give anything to play for such a team. But as spoilt and arrogant as he was, he was still singed to play football professionally, despite having an ongoing violent criminal history. It seems as though this footballer thought he was above the law, and with his wage packet, thought he pay his way out of any bad situation, and do pretty much what he wanted.

Finally though, Marlon King has been sacked from his team, and can’t buy his way out of this situation this time. Justice has been done, but who’s to say he won’t play again?

Footballers should play for the love of the game, not the hefty wage packet, and those who think they’re above the law should be brought back down to earth with a bang.
