HIGH Energy and great crowd involvement barely describes the show given by Eagles of Death Metal at Empire.
Created by Josh Homme (Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age) and Jesse Hughes (co-writer for QOTSA and lead singer) in the late 90s, during the infamous Desert Sessions. While Homme is often busy with his the success of Queens, he does sometimes still play with the Eagles of Death Metal.
“This isn’t a side project for me. I’m in two bands. I have musical schizophrenia, and this is one of those personalities,” says Josh Homme.
Call me biased, but I really love true American rock’n'roll, and this band is it.
You feel as if you know the band, and that there would be no problem just sitting with them drinking and smoking. Not to mention that Jesse Hughes loves to compliment his audeince, especially the ladies. Eagles of Death Metal has wonderful star potential and a lovely original sound. One day, I hope, maybe our kids will be calling them ‘classic rock’.
According to Music and Computer Games Design student, Sebastian Mich: “Eagles of Death Metal is just one of those few bands where you listen to them and you just get blown away by how original they sound.”
Eagles of Death Metal followed two other bands. Little Fish was first, a quirky rock-indie group, consisting of a female vocalist/guitar and her drummer. Their music is punky yet melodic. They have won numerous awards and play at tons of festivals. This little band is certainly something to watch out for. Before the show, I’d never heard of them, but was immediately intrigued by their unique sound and definitely look forward to seeing them again.
The second set was two members of The Damned. This band was originally formed in 1978, one of the first punk/Gothic rock bands, ever. And while, again, it was just a drummer and guitarist, there was very little singing for these two aging rockers, it was an awesome set. Even though the guitarist looked as if he should be lounging on a beach, drinking pina coladas (think flowered, Hawaiian shirt, chinos and a funky fedora) the crowd was definitely into their sound. They rocked out for a good 45 minutes. Winding up the audience and getting them all hot and bothered for the main event.
The crowd was brilliant! They were into the music and having a good time. Since moving to the area, I have been to quite a few gigs around the area and I must say that this has been one of the best.
