Tside for Journalism Students

Budding journalists at Teesside University  are reaping the rewards of a news website set up to publish their work.

Tside  is a multimedia news website by young people, for young people living in Middlesbrough and the  surrounding area.

The site was set up in January last year after the work of course lecturer and former News of the World journalist Bethany Usher.

Multimedia journalism students at the University run the website with minimal input from staff.

Tside encourages students to use all medias, text, audio and video to create multimedia packages.

Tside uploads videos using YouTube  which are embedded onto the site, so a lot of multimedia journalism has been created by Teesside Students.

Third year Multimedia Journalism student Sam Holdsworth, 20, said: “The Tside site is a great benefit for students like myself because it gives me the opportunity to write for a real website and get my work published, but still within the safe surroundings of the university so it can be checked and made better.”

The website is split into six sections, offering the latest local and national news and sport.

The entertainment section offers reviews and opinions on art and design, music, film, TV and radio, gaming and the theatre.

The issues section gives students the chance to address subjects which they feel are worth considering.

The lifestyle section of the news website offers an insight into local boutiques, exhibitions and the do’s and dont’s of the fashion world.

Students can also have their own blog space where they can write whatever is on their minds.

Student Nicola Golding , 19, said: “Tside gives you a chance to practise your writing for the web.

“It is really useful as you get the chance to make mistakes, but learn from them.!

Martin Jobling , 29, also a Multimedia Journalism student added: “It really is a good way to develop our journalistic skills.”

Tside strives to be balanced on all issues, but will not shy away from controversial areas.

The website made it claer from the very beginning thet it had strong opinions on racism and the environment,  and make no apologies when it comes to these issues.
