Newcastle
I’ve been wanting to take my blog to Newcastle since I started writing it, the shopping there has got to be better than Middlesbrough, right?
Wrong.
Well in the case of me and my terrible sense of direction anyway.
A quick Google search before I set off suggested that Newcastle would be a Mecca for those differently minded fashionistas, but if it is, why couldn’t I find any of these fashion havens?
I decided to take my mum with me on this trip, and she decided to bring her sat nav, apparently she didn’t think I’d be able to find Newcastle on my own.
She was given the job of setting up the sat nav but she accidentally set it up to take us home, so we got very confused and ended up driving around the same roundabout three times.
Obviously the trip wasn’t meant to be from the start.
My mum is not the biggest fan of my love of charity shops and insists on washing everything I buy before I wear them. Not that I have a problem with that, charity shops aren’t the best smelling places.
When we got there I did manage to dragĀ her in a few charity shops but I didn’t find anything worth buying. Not one thing.
On our way to the city centre we came across Grainger Market. I’d read about it on the internet but it turned out to be a bit of a disappointment.
In we went, hoping for some fabulous finds, and among the hundreds of butchers stalls (seriously, how many butchers do you need in one market? Surely one would do) we managed to spot a few stalls selling clothes.
We found an amazing shoe shop but it was quite expensive, definitely not appropriate for those on a budget, and a stall selling Moroccan-style scarves.
I found a pretty blue one with a gorgeous swirly pattern that I decided to buy, although they are not exactly unique – I’ve seenĀ lots people wearing them around uni – it was cheap, so at least it ticked off one of my requirements.
I’d read on the internet that there are a few vintage shops in Newcastle and some interesting independent shops to check out.
But me and my terrible sense of direction (combined with my mum’s terrible sense of direction and her reluctance to actually help me find them) meant I didn’t manage to track down any of these shops, which is a shame because some of them sounded really good.
I decided to give up on finding something unique, for this week anyway, so we went to Eldon Square and had a look round some of the high street shops.
I didn’t buy much though, out of principle.
Although this shopping trip didn’t go as well as I’d hoped, I’m planning on returning, hopefully next week but I’ll be taking someone who knows Newcastle with me, I can’t risk heading all the way there again and coming back with nothing to show for it!

Processing your request, Please wait....
I laughed out loud when I read: “In we went, hoping for some fabulous finds, and among the hundreds of butchers stalls (seriously, how many butchers do you need in one market? Surely one would do) we managed to spot a few stalls selling clothes.” I totally agree with you but the pick and mix stalls are great
Theres a couple of cute little vintage shop down a side street near pizza hut (imagine it asif you were walking up to the centre from the train station) xx
