Make Your Mark!

Breaking News… Country in ruins as thousands refuse to vote, democracy in meltdown, mob rule and looting erupts in a lawless ungoverned society.

Sounds unrealistic? Maybe not. The harsh reality is that if voting figures continue to decline we could see our proud heritage as the world’s first free society in tatters. The amount of young people who are exercising their right has seen a steady slowdown in the last ten years.

Today Tside  launches  Make Your Mark! A campaign to get YOU to vote!

Over the next three months we will be telling you why it is important you vote, how to vote and keeping you up to date with the issues that effect you.

We will make sure you know how to register, and when the registration cut off date is, so you don’t miss out.

And we will be giving you our point of view on what politicians are saying.

And our campaign is already attracting the attention of politicians who are keen to make sure they win you over

Middlesbrough MP Ashok Kumar said it was important that young people get out and vote in order to show they care about how their country is governed.

And the chair of Northern Labour MPs, who is defending a seven thousand majority in this year’s election, says that young people could hold the key to who wins in May.

Dr Kumar said: “I am delighted that Tside has launched this important campaign.

“If young people care about education, health or the direction you want our country to take, it is important you Make your Mark and have your say at the general election.”

The X-factor and Big brother reportedly claim more of the youth vote than the actual election. When asked most students said that they had voted for a contestant on a reality show but would not be voting in local or general elections.

Six out of ten students at the University admitted they had no interest in voting.

Johnathon Lake 21, said: “The Country in my opinion is in a real mess… who ever is in charge of the Country will not affect me”

Although voting for Alex Reid, Joe McEldrey or Gino D’Acampo has become more popular than plumping for a boring politician it’s the politician that makes a difference not just the front of OK magazine!

We want to show you how much your vote matters, do you care about your university fees?  Police on the streets as you stagger home from the nightclub?  Will you get a job after graduation?

Unlike ringing up an expensive voting line or pushing the red button on your TV the real voting system works differently and we want to show you how.

So you have no excuse for not using the vote that our ancestors fought for and women chucked themselves in front of horses to for.

We will speak to you around campus and find out the issues that you feel matter to you, we want to know what your manifesto would be if you ruled the world!

Middlesbrough South and Redcar MP Ashok Kumar!

Students of today are the people who create the world of the future, one which will make decisions about their jobs, their children, their lives .

From the SU hub to the top floor of Middlesbrough tower you can hear mutterings about the state of this, that and the other, these same complainers will also be the folks who tell you they don’t vote.

We say, if you don’t make your mark then shut up and put up, all it takes is a tiny cross on a ballot paper. Your future is in your hands.

Get on board and MAKE YOUR MARK!

Voting is a symbol that you care about the society you live in, enough to believe that you can make it better…
