In late 2014, Middlesbrough’s Baker Street went through a revamp. Out went the endless litter and dreary shop fronts and in came a new rise of independent businesses.

Now Baker Street is unrecognisable from it’s former self. Adorned with street art and pastel colours, the bunting

that hangs between the old shop fronts screams vintage and quirky.

Middlesbrough has celebrated it’s history and the results are fantastic.

With awards including ‘Rising Star’ in the Great British High Street  competition, it’s success has sparked urgent redevelopment on neighbouring Bedford Street.

Nestled amongst the vintage shops and independent hair salons is  The Twisted Lip, a small, quaint bar dedicated to giving it’s customers hand-picked ale and beers.

Upon entering the pub it’s evident that the owners wanted to reclaim  some of Middlesbrough’s culture. With the Victorian property stripped  back to hardwood floors, antique wallpaper and cast iron fireplaces. it’s like stepping back in time.

No two rooms are the same. Downstairs promises a quiet drink with your friends whereas upstairs guarantees a sing-a-long with the live acts they have playing. Sitting amongst the mismatched furniture, you can’t help but look around you at the collection of decor that the pub displays.

Cast iron anchors and oil painted ship art adorns the walls, giving an appropriate nod towards Middlesbrough’s naval and industrial history. It’s a refreshing breath of fresh air after the recent SSI closure.

As well as hand-picked ale, they offer a range of specialist drinks from hand pressed apple cider to spirits. So you can be sure there’s something for every taste bud.

Whilst sipping on your drink you’re surrounded by a warm atmosphere. A range of ages singing, laughing and remembering “the good old days” reminds you of what this bar stands for. It’s bringing back Middlesbrough’s past with a modern edge.

I’d highly recommend this bar for anyone looking for a quiet drink with friends.
