Students warned to lock doors and windows

Students have been urged to secure their doors and windows after burglars have started targeting unlocked premises in Middlesbrough.

There have been 19 burglaries where entry has been gained through unlocked doors and windows in the first seven weeks of the year, accounting for over 50% of all burglaries in that period.

At the age of 13 Stuart Walker and a group of friends decided to head down  to the local leisure centre and try something new. 

 He had no idea where it would take him.

But that decision has led to Stuart taking up a sport he never thought he would ever be involved in.

Drive Safer for Longer

A new scheme has  been road tested to help older motorists drive safely.

The  special one-day event was held  to give pensioners advice on when they might need to get their eyes tested before taking to the road.

A device called a vision screener was used so people could check how good their eyesight was.

Road Safety Officer Norma Sheppard was on hand to advice people who used the vision screener if they needed to visit an optician.

Norma said: “As we get older everyone loses some faculty.  Our reaction times slow and it comes so gradually that we don’t realise it. We want to keep people safer for longer.”

Journalists Need Shorthand Shocker!

News editors, training providers and journalism students gathered together at a conference in London recently to thrash out issues about the industry and the way in which professional qualifications are gained.

The National Council for the Training of Journalists invited 40 student representatives from  the 40 accredited courses across the UK to the impressive Guardian newsrooms to represent nearly 2,000 students registered on the industry-recognised training scheme.
