Poppy appeal lost on youth?

IT’s that time of year again, when those little red paper flowers appear pinned on the clothes of TV presenters across the nation and people decorated in medals rattle their tins in the town asking for donations.

But even though there are older people who stand proudly with their medals from the war collecting donations, there is the question of how are young people getting involved.

Michelle Williams, 17, said: “I’ve never really got involved with the Poppy Appeal, it was always something my grandparents told me about, because my great grandad was a service man, but I didn’t really know him. I guess it’s just something I’ve always associated with older people who were in the world war.”

Student’s family dies of Cholera

A UNIVERSITY of Teesside student spoke of his heartbreak today after discovering his aunt and uncle and seven-year-old cousin died in the Zimbabwe cholera epidemic.

Kuda- who has asked that we do not include his surname for fear of reprisals against his surviving family members by Mugabe supporters – had to make the agonising decision not to attend his Uncle John, Aunt Mary and little Tinashe’s funeral for fear he would be unable to return to the UK.

The dad-of-one, who is currently studying Media Studies , wanted to go back to his homeland for Christmas too, but the volatile situation in the divided country made it impossible.
