Coffey hat-trick rescues point against Hallam

A late goal from Ashley Coffey earned Teesside Men’s 1st Team a deserved point in their eventful BUCS Northern 3B season opener against Sheffield Hallam Men’s 2nd.

After a bright start, Teesside won a penalty which was converted by Coffey, but a quick-fire double from Torben Hierl turned the game on it’s head.

Coffey expertly steered in a free-kick to restore parity shortly after the interval, only for the home side to re-take the lead again through their captain Santos.

Typical of the game’s chaotic nature, Jack Haydon fumbled a corner ten minutes from time which allowed Coffey to tap-in and complete his hat-trick.

Hierl, a constant threat for Hallam throughout, struck the bar and post in the dying stages, but Jack Stephens goal ultimately lived a charmed life.

After Hallam inflicted their only defeat of their 2015/16 league campaign a year ago, which they eventually won by five points, Teesside may value this as a valuable result as they aim to retain their title.

Teesside face the early basement club Leeds Beckett Men’s 3rd next Wednesday at Middlesbrough Sports Village as they look to kick start their title defence.
