Mixed day for Teesside Cricketers against rivals Sunderland

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Teesside Mens’ Cricket Team as they took on Sunderland in the Varsity competition.

In the opening fixture Teesside mens’ 1XI team lost the toss and were inserted into bat at Middlesbrough Sports Village.

The Teessider’s got off to a bad start losing two early wickets when skipper Luke Kenning was dismissed for 0 shortly followed by Henry Moor who was out LBW for one.

Sam Everett led the way for Teesside with an unbeaten 44 from 21 balls backed by 31 from Richard Mains to lead Teesside to 91/3 from their 10 overs.

Sanderson, Hussain and Simms all bagged one wicket each for Sunderland.

It was Teesside who started brightly as Sunderland captain was caught cheaply for just three runs followed by Hussain being ran out for eight but a partnership of 36 between Sanderson (20) and Nasir (16) led Sunderland home with one over to spare.

In the second fixture of the afternoon Teesside 2XI team took on Sunderland 2XI with Sunderland batting first.

Two early wickets reduced Sunderland to 9/2 in the first over with Mayu Ji trapping Sunderland’s opener LBW for six with Billy Ahmed and Jake Tibbetts also striking for Teesside to leave Sunderland on 77/4.

Lal bagged two early wickets for Sunderland leaving Teesside 8/2 after one over and struggling but an unbeaten 24 from Mayu Ji and 17* from Alex Wilman saw Teesside 2XIs home in 7 overs.

President James Houmark said: “The 1st team were done by their left hander Sanderson, all it took was for us to get him out and 93 was a more than competitive total.”

“The extras (wides) were obviously an issue, myself included though these are tight indoors and wont be an issue outdoor next month.

“The 2’s were great, a fantastic effort all round; bowling, fielding and the batting.

“I think I speak for the majority in saying it was a sucess and everyone enjoyed themselves, thanks to all the lads who played and roll on BUCS .”
